The meaning of فلسفة lies in philosophy itself. In Greek philo means love and sophy means wisdom. Philosophers, hence, are people devoted to attaining wisdom. Philosophical methods include questioning, critical discussion, rational argument, and systematic presentation. Being wise means attempting to live and die well. The goal of wisdom is to attain fulfilment. Philosophical questions are foundational and abstract in nature. Phiosophers throughout the ages have tried to answer questions like what is the meaning of life, what is the purpose of life, does an omnipotent being really exist. Philosopher’s attempt to answer such questions by examining his or her beliefs and pondering whether the beliefs are valid. Questions emerge from these doubts which push the philosopher to dig deeper and examine his or her thoughts. Before answering any question the philosopher ensures that the question is well defined and clear. The philospher then tries answering the question by putting forth concrete reasons for his answer. The reasons put forth by one philosopher are then analyzed by other philosopher’s, which then, maybe criticized.

This process of criticism and judgement is known as dialectic. The ultimate aim of a dialectic is to prove the rationality of the arguments or refute them. There is a lot common between philosophical methods and scientific methods. . Historically philosophy encompassed any body of knowledge. Many of philosophy’s topics have evolved into other fields over time. Modern philosophy contains six branches viz. Metaphysics, Epistemology, Logic, Ethics, Politics and Aesthetics. Metaphysics is the part of philosophy that is concerned with the fundamental nature of reality and being.

Epistemology is the part of philosophy that studies knowledge. Logic is the part of philosophy that concerns developing valid arguments. Ethics is the part of philosophy that distinguishes between right and wrong actions. Politics is the branch of philosophy that studies government, citizen rights and political obligations. Aesthetics is the part of philosophy that deals with the perception of beauty.

Philosophy shapes modern existence and unknowingly has a huge impact in our lives. Logic plays an important role in computer technology by giving us more precise commands and thereby increasing the computing speed. Ethics plays a major role in medicine. Politics helps us understand how to better gain organized control over a human community. A good philsopher knows the danger of accepting knowledge at face value. They must quesion everything. Today, philosopher’s can be found working in many career fields. Those who study philosophy tend to lead fulfilling and successful lives.
